Winter Beauty Essentials

winterbeautyessentials
Regardless of where you live, a change in the climate calls for a necessary re-evaluation to your beauty routine. Living in the South, for me the winter isn’t quite as extreme compared to what I experienced growing up in the Northeast. It’s actually a welcome change from the long and almost unbearable hot and humid months of summer.

Still, I take some things out, put some things in, and leave some things just the way they are. My skin is very reactive to the environment and I find that the same products don’t always work as well all year round. There are a select few year round standouts that have been especially loyal to me this winter.

1. SK-II Facial Treatment Mask
I love face masks and like to treat myself at least 1-2 times a week. This is a little more expensive but is my all time favorite. It leaves a noticeable difference on my face and I save it for special occasions or when my skin is in a desperate state of emergency. I find my skin looking significantly brighter, clearer, and hydrated. There is also significantly more serum in these packets than your more affordable mask packs. I pour mine into a little travel dispenser and use it as a daily face serum.

2. Pomegranate Cleansing Cream
Regular cleansers can be a bit harsh and drying. Adding the moisturizing benefits of a cream or oil to a cleanser makes for a killer combo. This cream gently melts off all the make-up on my face including waterproof mascara while providing intense hydration. I always double cleanse when I use this which means I follow up with a foaming face wash. This method rebalances and protects my skin so that it is squeaky clean but never dry or stripped.

3. Diorsnow UV Shield SPF 50 PA+++
Just because it’s not sunny or even warm outside doesn’t mean the sun is any less damaging than it is in the summer. Sun protection is important ALL the time. I love this sunscreen all year round but it’s especially superior in the winter compared to its competitors because of its additional moisturizing benefits.  It sufficiently moisturizes but isn’t greasy and thick and absorbs quickly. Actually it’s more of a 4 in 1 product since it protects, moisturizes, brightens, and also acts as a great make-up primer. You get what you pay for, in which this case, is a lot. All the anti-aging products in the world won’t help you if you don’t use protection.

4. Aquaphor Healing Ointment
I discovered this through my dermatologist and haven’t looked back since. This is seriously the best at treating anything dry even when it’s at its most critical stage. It’s extremely inexpensive and incredibly effective. I can’t think of a better combination. The little travel sizes (which you can now buy) last me forever. No more falling for cool looking spherical lip balms (yes, EOS, I’m talking to you) for me.

5. Laneige Water Sleeping Pack
They say beauty is pain, which at times is certainly true. But it doesn’t always have to be. Channel your inner sleeping beauty and take advantage of a whole new realm of beauty products. There are a lot of sleeping packs coming to market now but this one is an old tried and true favorite that has received a lot of love and praise world wide. It is a gel serum like consistency that dries down completely. It doesn’t transfer onto my bedding and is so light weight I can’t even tell I have it on. I wash it off with warm water in the morning and feel a noticeable softness to my skin.

6. Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Face Mask
If you can’t tell by now, I love, love, love face masks. This one has quickly become one of my favorites. It is a honey consistency but not sticky at all. You apply it for 10 minutes and rinse off with warm water to be met with softer, glowing skin. Made with no parabens or sulfates, it is ideal for sensitive skin. It uses fruit enzymes to provide a gentle exfoliation so even those who have sensitivity to physical exfoliants would be okay to use this.

7. Buffy Body Butter by LUSH
Exfoliating is equally as important as moisturizing. I have to say, I’m an addict when it comes to my face skin care regimen, but am a little bit lax when it comes to my body so any effective shortcuts are welcome. This LUSH product can be used right in the shower to do both. There are exfoliants built right into the moisturizing bar so it’s a time saving 2 in 1 product. It’s great for the gams and leaves your skin feeling like a million bucks. I recommend using this at night so that the moisturizer has time to absorb into the skin since it is heavier like a body butter. The exfoliation is great but can be a bit harsh for the whole body so I just like to use it for my legs and occasionally my arms. The bar doesn’t seem that large but it does last you quite a bit. Just make sure to keep it protected and out of water when not in use.

8. Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum

It’s pretty common knowledge that you should never go outside in the cold with wet hair.  But, you shouldn’t go out without protection either. This has been my favorite serum for years. It protects my hair from the elements, cuts down on dry time, and leaves it feeling smooth and manageable.

9. Frederic Fekkai Au Naturel Dry Shampoo
It’s easy to overlook your scalp but it’s also skin and deserves some TLC too! The winter months are drying and excessive shampooing can strip the natural oils from your hair and scalp and make it worse. Using a dry shampoo to squeeze an extra day or two in between washings will make a huge difference. This is my favorite dry shampoo and works wonders! The powder is white but if I can easily blend it into my dark black/brown hair, then I’m confident anyone could.
